student calming in sensory room

At The Gateway School, we believe that every child deserves a space where they feel safe, calm, and understood. For many of our students, particularly those who struggle with sensory processing or emotional regulation, that space is our sensory room, a quiet haven designed to soothe and empower.

Sensory rooms aren't new, but how we approach them is deeply personal. Guided by current research and the lived experiences of our students, we've created a space that is responsive to individual needs while offering tools that promote autonomy, connection, and emotional growth.

 What Is a Sensory Room?

Research tells us that sensory environments can serve as both calming and stimulating, depending on a student's unique sensory profile. These environments use visual, auditory, tactile, and kinesthetic tools to support emotional regulation and engagement. Studies by Brzake et al. (2019) and others highlight the value of sensory rooms in helping students feel safe, motivated, and in control of their experiences, key elements that support learning and connection.

For students with disabilities, the world can often feel overwhelming. Bright lights, loud noises, or unstructured transitions can trigger stress, anxiety, or shutdowns. Sensory rooms provide a gentle alternative, a chance to pause, breathe, and reset. When students feel grounded in their bodies, they can participate in learning, build relationships, and navigate their day confidently.

A Room Designed with Purpose

At Gateway, our sensory room was designed with intention and care. From the beginning, we involved our Occupational Therapy Department to ensure the room reflected not just best practices, but the real needs of our students.

Sara Weiss, one of our experienced occupational therapists, played a critical role in guiding the layout and materials selection. Every element in the room was chosen for its ability to provide calming input, support sensory exploration, and promote self-regulation.

Tools That Comfort and Connect

One of the room's standout features is the bubble tube. Surrounded by mirrors, it draws students in with gentle light and motion. The bubble tube offers visual and tactile input, helping students regulate their breathing and settle into a quieter emotional state.

A ceiling-mounted swing offers vestibular input, which can be incredibly calming for students who seek movement as part of their regulation strategies. For others, a soft bean bag chair, weighted blanket, or quiet music from our Bluetooth-enabled speaker may be the right fit.

The room also features interactive tactile panels, gel tiles that squish and swirl under pressure, and a custom wall-mounted alligator board that invites students to explore with their hands. These tools provide sensory feedback that helps students calm their nervous systems and stay present in the moment.

Adjustable lighting and a projector displaying soothing imagery allow staff to fine-tune the environment to meet students' emotional states, whether overstimulated or withdrawn.

Empowering Students to Self-Regulate

What makes Gateway's sensory room unique isn't just the equipment; it's how it's used. Students are guided in recognizing their needs and learning to advocate for a break when overwhelmed. Over time, they understand the connection between their feelings and the tools that help them feel better.

This isn't just about calming down. It's about building lifelong skills. Learning to self-regulate, ask for help, and take ownership of one's emotional well-being is a decisive step toward independence, which we nurture every day.

A Reflection of Our Mission

The sensory room is part of our larger commitment to meeting students where they are. It reflects the heart of what we do: creating an environment where students are supported not only academically but also emotionally and physically. At Gateway, we don't believe there's a one-size-fits-all solution. We believe in spaces and strategies that are flexible, compassionate, and designed with real children in mind. Our sensory room is one more way we help students feel seen, supported, and ready to grow.
