Physical activity is an essential part of growth for all children. For students with special needs, movement can play a significantly more important role in supporting physical, emotional, and social development. At The Gateway School in Carteret, NJ, our Adaptive Physical Education (APE) program ensures that every student, regardless of ability, can participate meaningfully and confidently in physical education and inclusive sports.

A Program Designed for Every Student's Abilities

Our adaptive physical education program focuses on each student's strengths, needs, and comfort level. Classes take place three times a week and are tailored to allow students to develop fitness, coordination, motor planning, and body awareness at a pace that supports their success.

In addition to building physical skills, APE also supports essential social and emotional goals such as teamwork, turn-taking, following rules, and building confidence. These skills are necessary for students with disabilities.

Movement Programs That Support Learning

As a special education school serving Central New Jersey, Gateway integrates movement throughout the school day. Physical activity helps students regulate their bodies, improve focus, and transition more effectively into academic learning. Many students benefit from structured movement breaks, guided stretching, and equipment that supports sensory regulation and postural control.

Our movement supports aligning with other related services at Gateway, such as occupational therapy. (https://thegatewayschool.com/occupational-therapy/)

Inclusive Sports for Students With Disabilities

Inclusive sports are a meaningful part of our programming. Students participate in activities that span a variety of sports. These opportunities help students build stamina, sportsmanship, communication skills, and resilience. Adaptive rules, modified equipment, and individualized pacing ensure that all students can participate comfortably and safely.

Gateway also supports students training for the Special Olympics, including bocce and bowling. These opportunities enable students to experience achievement, teamwork, and pride that extend beyond the classroom.

Health and Fitness Opportunities Across the Year

Gateway offers additional programming that promotes wellness, physical fitness, and heart health. Activities include schoolwide fitness groups, heart health initiatives, adaptive swim sessions at the RWJ Rahway Fitness & Wellness Center in Carteret, just a few blocks from our school, and the use of modern fitness equipment such as stationary bikes and treadmills.

These programs ensure that students receive a well-rounded physical education experience that supports their Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals and personal needs.

A Supportive Environment for Growth

Gateway's adaptive PE and inclusive sports programs nurture the whole child. Students learn to trust their bodies, engage with peers, and discover activities they enjoy. These skills support confidence and independence in daily life.
